So...I hadn't heard of Helen Garner! I downloaded "The Spare Room" from my local library and loved it. She brought me right into the story and my heart broke and rejoiced right with her. I'll keep my eye open for Yellow Notebook. I want to hear more about her life. Thanks!
I'm so glad to hear this. She is very well known and loved in Australia, but for some reason her work never made a big impact overseas. The diaries are great and many of her true crime books are also very good. I recommend This House of Grief and Joe Cinque's Consolation.
Such a great write-up. It's so beautiful to think that you have a thorough archive of your life and your tips are really well thought out and helpful for someone who wants to pick it up (I reckon it's too late for this old soul, but ah well).
Now, when are you making your lifetime eating diary publically available? Sounds fascinating!
I love this! You're definitely a natural writer! Thanks for reminding me about Helen Garner's published diaries too :)
I thoroughly recommend the audiobook versions; she narrates them and they are delicious. She's so 'strine in her delivery.
I saw “This House of Grief” in my travels looking for the diaries. I’ll check it out!

Give me twenty years and I reckon they'll be ripe for the picking.
